Go easy on the effects
Everybody loves glitter, but all those cool effects come at a price -particularly on very old Computers with slower processors and negligible memory. If you’re one of those who care more about zippy performance rather than transparent Windows and animated controls, then consider turning off the visual effects.

To do this :
Click Start, and in the Search Box type “Visual”, minus the quotes.
“Click Adjust the appearance and overall performance of Windows”.

Apart from being faster (which is the whole point of an update, in my opinion), Firefox now offers protection from out-of-date plug-ins which can leave your computer vulnerable to attack. Don't worry; when an update to the problematic plug-in is released Firefox will let you know.

This is another one of those instances where I could've sworn we already had a tip on this somewhere, but again I was left in surprise. A reader e-mailed me recently and asked me how to set their mouse to single click in Windows Vista and Windows 7. I went looking through our vast archives and found no such thing, so I thought today would be a good day to break this one out!

Here's the info:

For Vista:

Click Start>Control Panel and make sure you're in Classic View. Then click “Folder Options”. You should see a screen similar to the image below.

For Windows 7:

Simply click Start and type in "Folder Options" in the Search Box and press Enter.



Simply make sure “Single-click to open an item” is selected; click Apply, and then OK.
